Canape Brizard 005
Louis XVI painted canapé signed Sulpice Brizard with original Aubusson tapestry in excellent condition. The rails are carved with raie de coeur and entrelac moldings and the rectangular back has a large pinecone finial at each end. The unusual round armrests, each with a large acanthus motif in front and terminating in scrolls at the sides would appear to be unique to this set. The eight legs are carved in spiral form beneath paterae. The back tapestry depicts a scene of children playing on a makeshift seesaw flanked by trophies; the seat tapestry shows a leopard and a wolf being playfully pursued by two dogs. The sofa has its original white paint

A marquise from the set, but later gilded and lacking the tapestry is illustrated in Pierre Kjellberg: Le Mobilier Français du XVIIIe Siècle, Éditions de l’Amateur, 2000. Page 131
