Gilded Louis XV canape

Exceptional Louis XV gilded canapé en corbeille. The well formed sofa is exquisitely carved on the back with a lion skin at the crest, a series of floral wreaths that entwine palm leaves and raised heads of a woman and bearded man in full relief. The enclosing back terminates in sinuous “S”- form armrest supports in front. The canapé rests on nine cabriole legs ending in scrolls. Because the piece has its original gilding in excellent condition, the carving is particularly sharp and fresh.

Height (ins.): 41 (105.4 cm.)      Length/Width (ins.): 73 (185.3 cm.)      Depth (ins.): 31 (78.7 cm.
Origin: France (Possibly Germany)     Period: Louis XV
