| Very fine Louis XV/XVI commode, veneered in tulipwood with a large sunburst motif on the front that is composed of sixteen pieces of crosscut tulipwood. The commode is veneered with complex amaranth, ebony and boxwood strapwork bandings. The frieze is veneered with Greek key motifs. Fine ormolu mounts with original gilding; the rounded corners with important ram’s head chutes. Original mottled Sainte Anne grey and white marble top. A very similar commode by the same maker is in the Rijksmuseum. (See: Reinier Baarsen: Paris 1650-1900 - Decorative Arts in the Rijksmuseum; Yale University Press, New Haven and London, 2013. Nº 81.) While unsigned and showing the influence of Jean-François Oeben, the commodes were probably made either by Simon Oeben, Jacques Dautriche or Pierre Macret. |
