Magnificent Louis XVI <i>bronze dore and bronze patine gueridon with bleu turquin marble top and base

Magnificent Louis XVI bronze doré and bronze patiné guéridon with bleu turquin marble top and base.
The frieze of the table portrays children holding swags alternately centered with birds or squirrels. The top is supported by three curved uprights headed by satyr heads framed with patinated wreaths above stylized acanthus leaves; the inside acanthus motif is connected to a curved stem terminating in a cluster of grapes. [Now welded to their brackets.] The uprights are joined by a round stretcher hung with rings. [The internal rosettes are now lacking.] The base of each upright extends from the back of a patinated seated griffin with a scrolled ormolu tail. An ormolu pineapple with patinated leafage centers the incurvated triangular ormolu base. The table rests on an incurvated bleu turquin plinth with a large ormolu acanthus molding.

The table is very well chased and has its original gilding.

The only other known table of this model, all gilded and now missing its marble plinth and the grape clusters is in the Musée Nissim de Camondo in Paris. The Camondo table is illustrated in many books on French furniture where it is often attributed to Thomire; although, more recent scholarship attributes it to Pierre Rémond. A similar table in the Spanish royal collection shares the same frieze.
